An insurance firm has threatened to sue the Taita- Taveta county government over unremitted premium payments of over Sh 70 million.

In a letter signed by Kennon M. Mbae the finance business partner, the county government is ordered to pay the sum of Sh 67,976,970 to Sanlam General Assurance, formerly Gateway Insurance Company Ltd, or face legal action.

This amount is for insurance cover provided by the firm on all  buildlings belonging to the Taita-Taveta county government.

“You are in breach of various policy agreements for failure, neglect and/or refusal to remit the premium payments for the policy numbers remunerated in the statements hereto attached which we issued to you between the periods of 15 November 2014 to 13 January 2016,” the letter reads in part.

The insurer wants the payments remitted in 14 days or else “proceed with legal action without further reference to you”.

The letter which was received and stamped by one Jumwa in  the office of the governor Taita-Taveta county, was also copied to one Anthony Thuo Kanai Advocates.

This is one of the many debts saddling the county government ,while contractors and suppliers are also demanding payments running to hundreds of millions of shillings which have not been paid for the past two years.
